Val Smith Ph. D

Dr. Smith (Purdue University, 1976) is a recognized expert
in quantitative and qualitative research. At Purdue his statistics coursework was from B.J. Winer, one of the most respected statisticians in the history of behavioural science. During the thirty plus years since then, Dr. Smith has directed more than 400 opinion research projects in the areas of public affairs, politics, and market research.

Specific research efforts have included a wide variety of political projects (State Assembly, State Senate, Constitutional Offices, State-wide initiatives, Congressional races, and even a Presidential race in Argentina). Dr. Smith has directed public affairs research for numerous public agencies, trade associations and NGO’s. In the area of market research Dr. Smith’s projects have measured public opinion on almost every topic from prenatal care to funerals.

In addition to serving as Research Director for SmithJohnson Research, Dr. Smith is a tenured professor at California State University, Sacramento where he has chaired the Communication Studies Department along with several campus-wide committees. Dr. Smith wrote key portions of the University’s last two accreditation applications. Currently he serves as a member of the University’s Faculty Senate. Dr. Smith’s primary teaching area is research methods and data analysis.

Dr. Smith’s methodological contributions have included the application of conjoint analysis to telephone and internet surveys and development of a commonly used logistic regression equation for calculating vote propensity. Currently he is completing work on a statistics package that provides interactive data analysis tools specifically for survey researchers and their clients.
